Ethical responsibilities of tenured academics supervising non-tenured researchers in times of neoliberalism and precarity

Neoliberal reform of the university sector has resulted in increasing numbers academics employed on casual or fixed-term contracts. While there is an emergent body literature issues precarity academy, relatively little attention been paid to roles and responsibilities those tenured who employ manage non-tenured researchers. The work involved hiring managing a contract researcher rarely acknowledged supported, managers receive no training. In this paper, we draw Dorothy Smith’s feminist sociological approach analyse interviews with 22 researchers examine how managerial relationships shape employment experiences working precariously. We argue that have ethical provide environment fair, supports ongoing development wellbeing staff, challenges dominant discourses precarious as ‘other’.
